Meeting with UNDP Team of Youth Economic Empowerment Project

The Yemeni Businessmen Club (YBC) met on Thursday 13/12/2012 with a delegation from UNDP headed by Ms. Randa Aboul-Hosn, the Country Director in Yemen and the team of the Youth Economic Empowerment Project. She said that there are a lot of developmental requirements in Yemen however the political issues should not dominate the economical ones. The UNDP is creating rapid-impact projects which could lead to great momentum to help bringing about change especially in the sectors of economy and development.
Ms. Aboul-Hosn stated that their meeting with YBC aims at finding an effective partnership with the private sector in order to better match skills development with private sector needs, through a job placement program like facilitating apprenticeships at the companies of YBC members and training young people according to specific needs. In fact the lack of qualified labor was identified as one of the main obstacles to job creation, and this is what the Youth Economic Empowerment Project is trying to address in close partnership with the private sector. Tailored training based on needs identified together with companies will highly contribute to improved job performance. Special attention should be given to the development of certain skills, such as labor's attitude at work, basic communication skills, and time management.
For his side Fathi Abdulwasa Hyel, YBC chairman, expressed his support to the initiative as a contribution to the development of the labor market in Yemen and YBC is going to encourage its members to participate in the success of such projects.
It was furthermore discussed how this approach interlinks with the Economic Reform Agenda (In which YBC is a participant), developing a post-Riyadh economic vision for the country, in which youth and employment have been identified as one of five priorities.
The meeting was attended by Iqbal Bahader undersecretary of Trade and Industrial Minister. Juma Abu-Hakmeh, GIZ expert on private Sector Development project. Ahmed Bazara, the head of the Economic Reform Team and a member of YBC Advisory Board. Yousef Alkuraimi, YBC Secretary-General, in addition to some YBC members and employees.
